Dusseldorf

Modern and elegant city, with many green spaces
Situated in the heart of Nordrhein-Westfalen, where the dark beer Alt is produced and where there are more than 220 thriving bars and restaurants together in a row, one after the other, Düsseldorf is famous for its internationally renowned trade fair centre, but which, after a day’s work, surprises its guests.

Instead of the image we bring from home of a cold and very organised German city, we find ourselves strolling in an old city along a river bank with an extremely wide choice of clubs and bars and the lively sound of a constant and multicultural nightlife, drawn but rather bewildered by the colours and the unexpected hospitality.

If we take advantage of the fact that it is easy to reach and has excellent connections, it would be worthwhile seeing it well in the light of day, maybe going directly from the airport to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Municipal Art Gallery. This Gallery, thanks to a private sponsor, offers “Museum Bikes” free of charge to whoever buys an entrance ticket, so that they can wander about peacefully and calmly. On reaching the Hofgarten (the Central Park), the extremely beautiful “green lung” of the city, make use of its 28 hectares by doing a bit of jogging or taking an invigorating walk, leaving enough time to locate the Pavilion, where, with one concert after another, the summer passes as though at the seaside.

Traditions are well safeguarded and culture takes a prime position in Düsseldorf, and this can been seen in the large number of galleries of all types housing art and craftwork, as well as the antique shopsdesign and gift shops and advertising and communication agencies.

In particular, the wonderfully restored area of the mercantile port offers the possibility of seeing interesting projects involving the recovery of industrial archaeological sites alongside buildings designed by internationally famous architects. A wonderful view can be had from Schlossturm (the Castle Tower) or the Rheinturm (the Television Tower), 234 metres tall with a ring-shaped revolving restaurant at 172 metres that completes a revolution every hour.

After walking, pedalling, climbing a tower and enjoying the smells of the giant würstel (frankfurters) everywhere, a visit to “the longest bar counter in the world” is a must. This is the Königsallee, a street only a kilometre long but in one of the most beautiful fashion villages in the world, with Aigner, Hermès, Prada, Vuitton and everybody who, twice a year, participates at CPD, the fashion trade fair that attracts fashion buyers from around the world.
What else can we say? Key words: book quickly, German pocket dictionary, and off you go!

BENRATH PALACE AND PARK (Schloss Benrath)

Schloss Benrath (Benrath Palace) was built as a pleasure and hunting palace for the Elector Carl Theodor. Today, the ensemble in its artistic unity of buildings, interior and gardens, 60 hectares in all, is considered one of Europe’s rare complete works of art of the late Baroque period. The main palace building (corps de logis), with its furniture, porcelain, paintings, etc., gives an impression of court life in the second half of the 18th century. The eastern wing houses the “Museum für Europäische Gartenkunst” (Museum of European Garden Art) and the western wing the “Museum für Naturkunde” (Museum of Natural Sciences).
