Province of Trapani

On the far westerly point of Sicily, the province of Trapani is abundant with marine havens and historic and archaeological evidence. The city of Trapani, famous for its salt pans, is situated between two seas and offers considerable wildlife and cultural attractions. A walk through the streets reveals eighteenth-century buildings, imposing churches, the shops of young coral sellers and the characteristic Piazza del Mercato del Pesce (Fish Market Square), know in the past as the Bocceria.

Erice - Copyright © Sisterscom.com / Shutterstock

Erice, a crossroads of ancient populations and civilisations, stands on the summit of Monte San Giuliano in a splendid panoramic position overlooking Trapani. The remains of a temple, erected by the Elymians and dedicated to worship of the god of fertility and love, can still be admired today. The city, surrounded by immense walls with a Norman castleGothic Cathedral and more than sixty churches, has a typically medieval urban plan with squares and narrow, winding roads overlooked by beautiful flower-filled courtyards and typical craft shops selling finely decorated ceramics, hand woven, brightly coloured rugs and traditional sweets made of almonds and candied fruit. Each summer the Week of Medieval and Renaissance Music takes place in Erice.

Another coastal resort is Marsala, well known for the production of the homonymous wine. As well as preserving important sacred monuments, such as the Cathedral dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury, the city offers an enchanting view of the Egadi islands enhanced by a limpid, iridescent blue sea. The coastline from Trapani to Marsala offers other extraordinary sights: the salt pans and the Nature Reserve of the “isole dello stagnone”, a vast marine lagoon of 2000 hectares with the island of Mothia, an ancient Phoenician colony of the 8th century B.C., sitting in its centre.

Gastronomic specialties
The gastronomic excellences of the Trapani cuisine date back to ancient traditions and perfume of spices skilfully mixed with the production of local products such as aubergines, tomatoes, red garlic from Paceco, "cartridgeto" melon and renowned vineyards.
