Palermo airport opens the new Pet area
A new Pet area of about 350 square meters has been inaugurated at Palermo's Falcone Borsellino International Airport, accessible 24 hours a day, dedicated to those traveling with their pets, dogs that assist people with fragility and also to those who are at the airport to accompany or welcome family and friends.
With this opening, Palermo airport becomes the first airport in Southern Italy to have an area of this type and the sixth in Italy, after the Pet spaces of Milan Linate, Rome Fiumicino, Bologna, Cagliari and Olbia. This is a service that expands the focus on passenger comfort and makes the airport experience more functional even for those traveling with pets.
The area is located in the external corridor between the two access ramps to the terminal, on the Departures level, in the area characterized by the artistic installations of the "salt towers". The location was chosen to ensure visibility and ease of access, so as to make the space immediately usable for those arriving at the airport with a pet. To improve reception, a new pavement and the restoration of the perimeter curbs were created.
For passengers, the new space offers a practical solution before the flight or while waiting at the airport. The area is in fact designed to allow dogs to relax, move, do their business and face the journey in more comfortable conditions. In addition, it can also be useful during the phases of accompaniment or reception of Travellers.
The space is enriched with greenery and Mediterranean essences and is equipped with several useful elements for both animals and owners. There are fountains with integrated bowls for drinking, multifunctional baskets with dispensers for hygienic bags, wooden and steel benches for resting and a lighting system. An information board with the regulations of use has also been installed at the entrance.
The opening of the PET area at Palermo airport is part of a broader vision of development of airport services. According to the data cited by the manager, about 30% of pet owners, equal to 8.4 million people, prefer to travel with their pet, although 15% are still forced to leave it at home due to limitations related to destinations or available services.
