The new Terminal 3 of Rome Fiumicino Airport

Over 250 million invested for the regeneration of the non-Schengen terminal: 30% increase in capacity, advanced technologies and services optimized for the Summer 2025 season

The upgrading and regeneration works of Terminal 3 of the "Leonardo da Vinci" airport, the result of an investment of over 250 million euros, were officially inaugurated today.

Terminal 3, operational since 1961 and historically dedicated to non-Schengen flights, represents an architectural unicum in the international airport scene. The regeneration project covered a total area of 41,000 square meters on three levels (equal to about six football fields), built while always ensuring the full operation of the airport.

The intervention involved over 25 Italian companies and brought significant improvements:

  • 6 new check-in islands with 150 counters, bringing the total to 248, including 60 self-service stations,
  • increase in baggage belts from 9 to 14, with a total length doubled from 400 to 800 meters,
  • renovation of the sensitive flight safety area, with 11 RX machines,
  • redevelopment of border crossings and building infrastructure,
  • seismic enhancement, new fire-fighting systems(3,100 detectors, 88 smoke extractors),
  • lighting renovation and 15 new air handling units.

The entire intervention has also restored the Terminal to its historic façade, with large transparent surfaces that favor natural light and visual permeability.

Thanks to these improvements, Terminal 3's capacity for arriving passengers has increased by more than 30%, ensuring full functionality for the 2025 Summer Season.

Development will continue with a new long-term plan of 9 billion euros, aimed at strengthening Italian air connectivity and fully seizing future opportunities in the sector.

A result that is reflected in the awards obtained: in 2025 Fiumicino entered the Top 10 Skytrax of the Best Airports in the World, reaching 8th place, and confirmed the 5 Skytrax Stars, the highest international recognition for airport quality standards.

"The regeneration works of Terminal 3 are part of the medium-long term infrastructure enhancement strategy which, over the last ten years, has led us to invest, in the airports of Fiumicino and Ciampino, about 3 billion euros, equal to half of the resources committed, in the same period, by the entire Italian airport sector" said the CEO of ADR Marco Troncone.
