Flying with pets in the cabin
The Board of Directors of ENAC yesterday approved a resolution that allows the transport of PET in the cabin even beyond the current limit of 8-10 kg (depending on the airline).
The new rules for transporting pets by plane
The new rules, drawn up by the National Civil Aviation Authority, allow airlines to adopt dedicated procedures:
- Animals must be placed in approved carriers, which can also be positioned above the seats, without hindering emergency exits or the operation of the crew, ensuring their well-being.
- The containers must be fixed with belts or with specific anchoring systems.
- The total weight of the animal and the carrier may be higher than the current limits, but not exceed the maximum weight for an average passenger.
A measure that intercepts a change in travellers' needs and makes air transport more pet-friendly. Pets will travel by plane in the cabin with their owners and no longer in the hold.
The President of ENAC, Pierluigi Di Palma, welcomed the resolution of the Board of Directors with satisfaction: "The ability of ENAC, as the national authority of civil aviation, is confirmed, also on the basis of a specific address of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, to open up to regulatory solutions that, in full respect of flight safety, at the same time respond to new social needs, facilitating the transport of their pets by plane to a greater number of passengers".
