Over 50 million passengers at Fiumicino
For the first time in its history, Rome Fiumicino Airport exceeds the threshold of 50 million passengers per year, confirming itself as one of the most dynamic and strategic airports in Europe and internationally. The milestone was reached at the gates of the Christmas holidays, a period during which more than 2 million passengers are expected between 22 December and 7 January, in addition to about 180 thousand transits at Rome Ciampino airport.
2025 is thus heading towards closure with over 51 million passengers overall, up more than 4% compared to the previous year. A result that consolidates Leonardo da Vinci's role as a reference hub for air traffic in Southern Europe.
An ever-expanding global network
At the basis of this growth is a network that in 2025 reached 240 destinations in 80 countries, served by about 100 airlines, with over 30 new routes inaugurated during the year. Six new carriers have also chosen Rome Fiumicino to start their operations, further strengthening the airport's connectivity.
Long-haul is confirmed as one of the main drivers of development. North America maintains its leadership with 4.7 million passengers, supported by a summer schedule that has reached up to 40 daily departures. Growth in the winter months is also particularly significant, with traffic increasing by 20% compared to 2024 and by more than 75% compared to the pre-Covid period.
Asia is growing and short-medium haul is strengthening
Excellent results also come from the Asian market, which in 2025 recorded a 16% increase in movements, driven by demand to South Korea, Japan and Bangladesh, as well as the return of the direct connection with Hong Kong, operated by Cathay Pacific.
At the same time, the strengthening of short and medium-haul flights continues, thanks to the development projects based in Fiumicino of carriers such as Wizz Air and easyJet, which contribute to improving the offer of European and leisure connections.
An increasingly strategic hub for Italy
On an industrial level, Lufthansa's entry into ITA Airways represents a key step for the future of the airport, intended to strengthen the positioning of Rome Fiumicino as a top-level intercontinental hub.
It is no coincidence that Leonardo da Vinci has been included in the Top 10 of the most connected airports in the world according to Cirium and has been confirmed for the eighth consecutive time as the best airport in Europe by ACI World, as well as receiving the title of "Airport of the Year" at the International Airport Summit 2025 in Berlin.
Investment and sustainable development
The record of 50 million passengers also represents a starting point for the future. The Sustainable Development Plan presented to the institutions provides for over 9 billion euros of self-financed investments, aimed at increasing capacity, improving operational resilience and ensuring the environmental sustainability of the airport in the coming decades.
"This milestone is the result of a long-term industrial vision, consistent investments and the daily work of a great team", said Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, underlining the central role of the airport for global connectivity, tourist attractiveness and the country's economic competitiveness
