In 2000, Sofia Airport Terminal 1 was totally renovated. Built during the first half of 20th century, extended and refurbished multiple times, the Terminal still bear the imprint of architectural influences of that time. In 2006, on the eve of Bulgarian accession to European Union, Sofia Airport celebrated its 70th anniversary with a new appearance: marked the opening of Terminal 2, characterized by a modern architectural design.
 
With annual capacity of 2.6 million passengers, Terminal 2 was designed to meet the requirements of the fast developing traffic during. Terminal 2 has commercial units on a total area of 4000 m², which offer passengers a variety of services - restaurants, cafe-bars, shops, tourist and rent-a-car services, banks and currency exchange offices. Automated baggage handling system with integrated four-level security control, thirty-four check-in desks, and modern flight information display system are only part of the facilities providing high level of passengers.
 
The Sofia International Airport is located 6 km from the city center of Sofia.

Transport to/from the Sofia airport
Metro
The metro station at Sofia Airport is located in the eastern part of Terminal 2.  Sofia Metro Line 1 connects Sofia Airport to the city centre and provides direct connection from the airport to “Druzhba”, “Mladost”, “Zapaden Park” and “Lyulin”. The journey time from Sofia Airport to the city centre is approximately 18 min.
Connection with the railway transport is possible with two stops (from Metro station Sofia Airport at Metro station Iskarsko shosse) and with a changeover there to trains on the Sofia-Plovdiv and Sofia-Karlovo lines.
 
Bus
Sofia Airport provides free-of-charge transportation between the two terminal buildings with shuttle bus.
Public bus lines connect Sofia Airport to Sofia.
  • 84 bus route connects city centre (Gen. Gurko Str.) with Sofia Airport Terminal 2 and Temrinal 1. Bus goes back along Christopher Columbus Blvd. – Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd. to Gen. Gurko Str.
  • 184 bus route connects city centre (Gen. Gurko Str.) with Sofia Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Bus goes back along Christopher Columbus Blvd. – Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd. – Gen. Gurko Str.
  • 384 bus route provides access to Sofia Airport – Terminal 2 from Druzhba 2 residential district. The bus service starts from Druzhba 2, goes along Christopher Columbus Blvd. through Druzhba 1 to Terminal 2 and then goes back following the same route.
 
Car
Sofia Airport is easily accessible from Brussels Boulevard which is the main roadway linking the airport to the city. Sofia Airport has a connection to the city centre westwards, and to Trakiya (A1) motorway eastwards.
 
Taxi
The services of taxi is located at Terminal 1 and 2.
 
Car hire
At Terminal of the airport is possible rent a car with Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Enterprise, Thrifty, Sixt, Avis and other.
