Jeddah

Saudi Arabia's second largest airport and one of the busiest in the world, King Abdulaziz International Airport - also known as Jeddah International Airport or simply KAIA - serves Jeddah and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina welcoming millions of pilgrims for the Hajj and Umrah (two sacred pilgrimages of Islam in Saudi Arabia), as well as travellers from all over the world. Opened in 1981, it is named after the founder of Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz, and is located 19 kilometers north of the city of Jeddah.

The airport has three parallel runways and the one to the north is shared with the Royal Saudi Air Force Air Base at King Abdullah Air Base. The airport has a Royal Terminal and three passenger terminals, including a purpose-built Hajj Terminal with an open structure and a tent-shaped roof to handle the considerable traffic during the pilgrimage season, with a capacity that accommodates up to 80,000 travellers at the same time. The Hajj Terminal structure is considered an environmentally friendly building and received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1983.

Each terminal is distinguished by its diversity: Terminal 1, is the main hub for domestic and international flights and also houses a mosque and a 4-star hotel, Aerotel Jeddah; The North Terminal is practical with fast check-in and self-service kiosks; the Hajj and Umrah complex is dedicated to passengers traveling on pilgrimage and also offers a souk and several dedicated services. The terminals are equipped with areas for families with children, prayer rooms, lounges as well as duty free, shops, restaurants and bars open every day 24 hours a day.

The airport is served by several carriers and serves as the main hub for Saudia Airlines, the Saudi flag carrier, and as a base of operations for domestic low-cost airlines Flynas and Flyadeal.
