Fuel crisis and risky flights: what are the rights of passengers
The international crisis linked to the Middle East brings one of the most strategic elements for air transport back to the center of attention: fuel. Tensions in the area, and in particular instability involving crucial routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, are already affecting the kerosene market, making it more expensive and, in some cases, more difficult to source.
At the moment there is no generalized blockage of air traffic, but several signs indicate a delicate phase. Some airlines are reviewing their flight schedules, while refueling restrictions are beginning to emerge at certain airports. If the situation continues in the coming months, especially between spring and summer, a concrete impact on flights, prices and availability is not excluded.
What happens if your flight is cancelled
In the event of flight cancellation, even if due to fuel shortages, passengers are not left without protection. In fact, European legislation provides for the possibility of choosing between:
✔️ Refund of the flight ticket
✔️ rerouting on an alternative flight, as soon as possible or at a later date.
If the cancellation involves prolonged waits at the airport, the airline is also obliged to provide assistance, including meals, any accommodation and communication support.
The first interlocutor is always the carrier, which has the obligation to manage the situation in compliance with the rules.
Indemnification: when it is not guaranteed
The situation is different for economic compensation, which normally varies between 250 and 600 euros. In this scenario, it is likely not to be automatically recognized. Cancellation linked to an international crisis or conflict can in fact be considered an extraordinary circumstance, exempting the company from paying compensation. In these cases, reimbursement and assistance remain valid, but not necessarily the additional compensation.
Compensation is also not due if the passenger is informed at least two weeks in advance or if he or she is offered an alternative flight with similar schedules.
Travel insurance: beware of exclusions
In a context of uncertainty, many Travellers consider taking out insurance. A choice that can be useful, but which must be interpreted correctly.
Travel policies generally cover:
✔️ medical expenses,
✔️ health problems or injuries,
✔️ lost luggage,
✔️ interruption of the trip for personal reasons.
However, in most cases, situations related to war, conflict or geopolitical crises, just like the current one, are excluded. This means that a cancellation due to fuel shortages is unlikely to be covered.
This is why it is essential to read the conditions carefully before purchasing, avoiding relying on roofs that may not be operational.
Better to focus on flexible tickets
For those who have yet to book, the most prudent strategy is to choose flexible or refundable rates, even if they are more expensive. This option allows you more freedom in the event of changes or cancellations. Another element to consider concerns the routes: the most exposed connections seem to be those to Asia or linked to stopovers in the Middle East, while the European and transatlantic routes are, at least for now, relatively more stable.
What to do before departure
At this stage, it is essential to constantly monitor the status of the flight through the companies' official apps and channels.
It is equally important to keep all travel documentation (tickets, receipts, communications) that may prove essential for any refund requests. Finally, beware of vouchers: in the event of cancellation, companies can offer vouchers or credits, but the passenger is always entitled to request a cash refund and is not obliged to accept alternative solutions.
The picture remains evolving and much will depend on the duration and intensity of the international crisis. For now, air traffic continues to operate, but with an increasing level of attention. For passengers, the key word is awareness: knowing their rights, carefully evaluating purchase options and staying up to date will be essential to deal with any inconvenience and continue to travel in a safer and more informed way.
