Enac and Aeroporti di Roma launch "Rent Carrozzella"
"Rent Carrozzella", the new project promoted by ENAC to make air travel more autonomous and accessible to people with disabilities and reduced mobility, kicks off at Rome Fiumicino airport.
The initiative involves the installation of special digital totems at the airport for donations via electronic payment. The spaces are made available by Aeroporti di Roma, while the resources collected will be used entirely to purchase new generation wheelchairs.
The goal is to progressively develop a service that allows passengers to rent modern, functional mobility aids suitable for different travel needs directly at the airport .
A fundraiser open to passengers
The campaign was launched with the first donations made by the president of ENAC, Pierluigi Di Palma, and the CEO of Aeroporti di Roma, Marco Troncone.
The project aims to involve institutions, airport managers and citizens in a shared model of solidarity and social innovation. Through the donations collected at Fiumicino it will be possible to expand the number of chairs available and, in perspective, extend the service to other Italian airports as well.
More autonomy during the journey
"Rent Carrozzella" was created to respond to a concrete need: to allow people who need mobility support to find adequate aid upon arrival at the airport, without necessarily having to carry their wheelchair throughout the journey.
ENAC President Pierluigi Di Palma underlined how autonomy, dignity and freedom of movement must become effective elements of the airport experience. The project had also been illustrated to the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella during the celebrations for the 65th anniversary of Fiumicino airport.
According to Aeroporti di Roma, the initiative strengthens the path taken to make the capital's airports increasingly accessible and welcoming, transforming the comparison with institutions and associations into concrete services for travellers.
A possible model for Italian airports
The project received the appreciation of the Minister for Disabilities, Alessandra Locatelli, who highlighted the link between the right to mobility and full participation in social, working and cultural life. FISH, the Italian Federation for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Families, has also welcomed the collaboration between ENAC and Aeroporti di Roma, hoping that the service can become a widespread standard in the national airport network in the future.
"Rent Carrozzella" is part of ENAC's broader commitment to promote accessibility, inclusion and innovation in transport, with the aim of guaranteeing each passenger a simpler, safer and more independent travel experience.
