BER begins the green revolution
With photovoltaic systems on parking lots and ambitious sustainability goals, Berlin-Brandenburg Airport accelerates towards carbon neutrality by 2045
Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) marks a significant step towards sustainability with the start of work on the installation of the first photovoltaic systems. By spring 2025, three systems will be installed on the roofs of the P3, P7 and P8 car parks, located directly in front of Terminal 1. This project represents the first step in a larger plan to install photovoltaic systems on additional rooftops and open spaces at the airport by 2030.
Building photovoltaic systems in an airport comes with specific challenges. To ensure the safety of airport operations, an in-depth study of the glare effect and possible radar interference caused by the panels was necessary, given their proximity to the runways.
In addition to this first phase, the airport has opened calls for tenders at European level to develop additional photovoltaic systems on two open spaces. This strategic approach aims to progressively increase the share of renewable energy used, in line with the commitment of the ADV (German Airports Association) to reduce CO2 emissions by 65% by 2030 compared to 2010 levels, and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
This project is an integral part of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH's strategy to ensure a secure, sustainable and cost-effective energy supply. With the expansion of renewable energy, BER proves to be a leader in the green transition of the airport sector.
With an ambitious vision and a concrete commitment, Berlin Airport not only responds to environmental needs, but also lays the foundations for a more sustainable future, combining technological innovation and ecological responsibility.
