Olbia and Alghero airports reduce emissions
The airports of Olbia and Alghero are strengthening their sustainability path with new environmental certifications and more ambitious emission reduction programs. The two airports in Northern Sardinia have in fact updated their level as part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation, the main international standard dedicated to the management of airport emissions.
Olbia Airport has achieved Level 3+ "Neutrality", which recognizes not only the measurement and reduction of emissions directly controlled by the airport, but also the involvement of airport operators and the compensation of residual emissions.
Alghero Airport, on the other hand, confirmed Level 2 "Reduction", consolidating the carbon footprint monitoring system and the actions already taken to limit it.
Net Zero goal by 2040
Both airports have also obtained the validation of their respective roadmaps towards Net Zero, bringing forward to 2040 the goal of zero net emissions set by the European airport sector for 2050.
Olbia Airport aims to reduce emissions by up to 98% compared to 2023, through greater energy production from renewable sources, the progressive electrification of vehicles, the use of alternative fuels and closer collaboration with companies, suppliers and operators present at the airport.
Alghero Airport, on the other hand, expects a reduction of up to 96% compared to 2024, intervening on the energy efficiency of buildings, heat pumps, the electrification of fleets and circular economy projects.
Both airports already use electricity from 100% renewable sources, with the consequent elimination of indirect emissions associated with the purchase of electricity.
What changes for passengers
The certifications do not directly change travel procedures, but accompany interventions intended to make airports more efficient and less impactful. The measures envisaged include electric service vehicles, buildings with reduced consumption, greater internal energy production and a more sustainable management of operational activities.
For those transiting through the airports of Olbia and Alghero, this means using airports engaged in a route verified according to international standards, with measurable objectives and defined deadlines.
In the coming years, the airport system of Northern Sardinia will therefore continue to invest in decarbonisation, energy self-production and collaboration with local businesses and communities, with the aim of combining traffic growth with a progressive reduction in environmental impact.
