Van Dyck protagonist in Genoa

Palazzo Ducale hosts a major exhibition dedicated to the Flemish master: a journey through Antwerp, Genoa and London through masterpieces from the most important European museums

Genoa is preparing to welcome one of the most important cultural events of the season with "Van Dyck the European Championship. The journey of a genius from Antwerp to Genoa and London", the great exhibition inaugurated on March 19 at the Doge's Palace and dedicated to one of the most famous and beloved artists of European painting.

Curated by Anna Orlando and Katlijne Van der Stighelen, the exhibition traces the entire artistic career of Antoon Van Dyck, following his evolution from Flanders to England, with special attention to the years he spent in Italy and in particular in Genoa, a city that played a central role in his training and in the definition of his style.

The exhibition brings together 60 works by Van Dyck, divided into ten thematic sections and distributed in the rooms of the Palace, thanks to loans from some of the most important European and Italian museums. The exhibition compares the different moments of his production, highlighting the artist's extraordinary ability to interpret different environments, patrons and sensibilities.

Alongside the famous portrait painter Van Dyck, the public will also be able to discover the lesser-known face of his sacred works, where emotional intensity, theatricality and a profound expressive force emerge. To further enrich the exhibition contribute some exceptional loans and the first known self-portrait of the artist, made at a very young age.

The initiative also represents an invitation to experience Genoa as a city of art, following the traces left by Van Dyck in the collections and historic buildings of the Ligurian capital. An exhibition of strong international appeal that combines beauty, research and enhancement of the territory, offering visitors a precious opportunity to rediscover the dialogue between European art and Genoese identity.
