New Terminal at Almaty Airport
T2 covers an area of more than 53,000 square meters and will be able to accommodate up to 14 million passengers on international flights
The new Terminal 2 (T2) of Almaty International Airport (ALA) has been put into operation much earlier than planned. The building was originally scheduled to open in late summer 2024, but construction work has been accelerated as a result of high and rapidly growing demand for flights to/from Almaty. The new building, which covers an area of more than 53,000 square meters, will increase the airport's capacity to 14 million passengers per year.
T2 houses, among other things, 32 immigration check-in counters, 20 passport control counters on departure, 4 automated passport control stations, several co-working areas, quiet zones, prayer rooms and numerous services for families with children and travelers with disabilities.
The new Terminal 2 was designed exclusively for international flights, while the existing terminal is now used for domestic flights within Kazakhstan. Air Astana has already moved all international flights to and from Almaty to T2. This includes, for example, direct flights to Bangkok, Seoul and Beijing.
With a population of around two million, Almaty is the largest metropolis in Kazakhstan and is also the country's main economic centre as well as an important exhibition centre in Central Asia.
