New flight to Xi'an at Milan Malpensa airport
With China Eastern from Milan direct flight to Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi in China
Last night saw the inauguration of the first direct flight operated by China Eastern departing from Milan, an event that further strengthens Malpensa's role as the main hub for long-haul air traffic in Northern Italy. Milan thus becomes the only Italian city and the third in Europe to offer a direct connection with Xi'an, the capital of the province of Shaanxi.
This important result was possible thanks to the close collaboration between ENAC and CAAC, and is the latest in a series of successes: in the last twelve months, six new routes have been activated from Malpensa to China, for a total of 11 connected airports and 37 weekly frequencies.

The launch of this new route marks a significant moment for relations between Italy and China and for Malpensa airport, especially in view of Italy's inclusion among the 11 European countries exempted from visa requirements for a stay of up to 15 days in China.
This facility is intended to encourage outbound tourism to China, attracting travelers eager to discover a fascinating destination like Xi'an, famous for the legendary Terracotta Army, one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world.
This direct link takes on symbolic significance on the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo's death, evoking the idea of a modern Silk Road that connects Italy to the historic city of Xi'an, the ancient explorer's starting point.
For Milan Malpensa Airport, China represents the second long-haul market by traffic volume, with an average of over 1,000 Chinese passengers departing every day. This development is part of a very positive growth trend for Malpensa and Linate, both operated by SEA, which have been recording record numbers since the beginning of the year: 25.8 million passengers in the first eight months of 2024, an increase of 9% compared to 2019 and 11% compared to 2023.
