Naples Airport: new non-Schengen terminal and more passenger services
Naples-Capodichino Airport has presented the new 2035 Masterplan, approved by ENAC in August 2026, which defines the development of the airport for the coming years. The plan provides for over 250 million euros of investments, of which 230 million with private resources, and the acquisition of about 170,000 m² of new areas to make the airport more efficient, accessible and integrated with the city.
The main interventions include a second terminal of about 15,000 m² dedicated to non-Schengen flights, together with new parking areas for aircraft, a new cargo-logistics area, an airport hotel, the strengthening of the access roads and the burial of Viale Maddalena. The plan also includes over 13 million euros of interventions for environmental sustainability.
More capacity without increasing hourly movements
The Masterplan envisages traffic growth of up to 17.3 million passengers per year by 2035, without increasing the airport's current hourly capacity. According to GESAC, the increase will be made possible by the use of higher capacity aircraft, higher load coefficients and more efficient flight scheduling, with better distribution in less congested time slots.
For passengers, the new non-Schengen terminal and the expansion of spaces should translate into a more orderly management of international flows, greater comfort and services more suited to the growth of the airport.
New road system and better integration with the city
Another central chapter concerns accessibility. The Masterplan provides for a new ring road system, with a second vehicular exit on Viale Maddalena, designed to lighten traffic in the area surrounding the airport. The burial of the avenue will also make it possible to recover surfaces to be used for green spaces, public areas and cycle and pedestrian connections between the district, the metro network and the airport.
On the public transport front, the connection with the future Capodichino metro station is indicated as one of the elements intended to improve the accessibility of the airport, connecting it with the Central Station and the center of Naples. This infrastructure is referred to in the broader framework of urban mobility and not as a work financed directly by the 250 million of the Masterplan.
Sustainability and new spaces
The project also dedicates space to the environmental component. In addition to the 13 million euros planned for environmental sustainability interventions, about 20,000 m² of photovoltaic system, with an additional annual production estimated at 4,800 MWh. The declared goal is to accompany the growth of the airport with interventions that improve not only capacity and services, but also the urban quality of the surrounding areas and the integration between the airport, the neighborhood and the city.
For travellers, the 2035 Masterplan of Naples airport therefore aims to build an airport with more space for non-Schengen flights, better access, new services and greater integration with Naples, supporting traffic growth without increasing the current number of hourly movements.
