Passengers flying with Egyptair, Egypt's flag carrier, can take advantage of a free transit visa valid between 8 and 96 hours, perfect for a weekend getaway in Cairo. Available upon arrival at Cairo International Airport, the visa can be obtained at the transit office by presenting the flight ticket. Cairo, just four hours from Italy, offers a fascinating journey through history, culture and architecture, from the Pyramids of Giza to Coptic Cairo.
The Egyptian capital is a true open-air museum, where the contrast between ancient and modern can be felt in every corner. A visit to the pyramids, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, offers a journey back in time, while Islamic Cairo, with its palaces and mosques, proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is not to be missed. The GEM, the Grand Egyptian Museum, offers a rich collection of artifacts from ancient Egypt, with the Hall of Tutankhamun and the Hall of Mummies capturing the imagination of visitors.
In the Coptic Cairo district, rich in history, there are jewels such as the Hanging Church and the Coptic Museum, which houses the largest collection of Coptic art in the world. The view from the Citadel, with the view over the rooftops of the capital, and the exploration of the Khan el-Khalili souk offer unique perspectives of the city, enriched by exotic colors, flavors and scents. For a break, sipping mint tea in historic cafes such as El Fishawi or Naguib Mahfouz is an unmissable experience. Egyptian cuisine, from tagines to mezze, can be enjoyed in the fine restaurants along the banks of the Nile, such as Abu El Sid or Sequoia.
