Emirates innovates flight safety

Emirates is taking a step forward in aviation safety innovation with a new technology strategy that aims to significantly reduce incidents of unexpected turbulence and improve passenger comfort. The airline has adopted a multi-layered, data-driven approach that leverages artificial intelligence, machine learning, and real-time weather data to plan smoother and safer flights.

The increasing frequency and intensity of turbulence is a challenge for modern aviation. Emirates is responding to this phenomenon with an integrated digital ecosystem that combines several forecasting and monitoring platforms, including SkyPath, Lufthansa Systems' Lido mPilot and the IATA Turbulence Aware programme.

Three technologies for a more stable flight

• SkyPath, developed in partnership with Emirates, uses artificial intelligence to identify areas of turbulence that cannot be detected by traditional methods. Thanks to the real-time analysis of data from thousands of aircraft and patented sensors, the system provides accurate forecasts even in areas without air traffic or subject to turbulence in clear air.
• Lido mPilot, a customized solution from Lufthansa Systems, integrates dynamic navigation maps and detailed weather forecasts, providing pilots with up-to-date information on clouds, convection, turbulence and ice. This improves situational awareness in the cockpit, allowing for faster and safer decisions.
• IATA Turbulence Aware, the International Air Transport Association's program, collects and shares turbulence data from airlines around the world. Emirates actively contributes its operational reporting, enriching the global platform and benefiting from a real-time view of weather conditions.

Data and AI at the service of flight comfort

The integration of these instruments into the on-board digital navigation system (Electronic Flight Bag) allows Emirates pilots to view areas of turbulence live, anticipating weather conditions and changing the route to ensure maximum safety and comfort.

This initiative has already led to a significant reduction in episodes of unexpected severe turbulence in recent months, helping to make travel more comfortable and safer for passengers.
