Specialties not to be missed in Mauritius
Biryani
The famous biryani is a mixed rice dish prepared with spices and meat, originating from the Indian subcontinent. But Mauritian biryani is unique and tastes different than other places you may have tried before. More than just a dish, the scent of its spices is said to evoke celebrations, and it has become a favorite meal on special occasions for many Mauritian families.

Gateaux Piments
Gateaux Piments are delicious fried Mauritian meatballs with a crunchy texture, which resemble falafel but are distinguished by a strong spicy note. They are a traditional local snack made with peas, chili peppers, and cilantro. Favorite way to eat them in Mauritius? Crumbled into a soft white baguette.

Fresh tropical fruit juices
To start the day with an extra gear, find refreshment on a hike or cool off while relaxing on the beach, there is nothing better than a freshly squeezed tropical fruit juice: you can find it in all hotels, markets and kiosks.

Mauritius Food Route
The right itinerary to try them all... Tasting typical Mauritius street food and eating at some of the best local restaurants is an important, perhaps essential part of the travel experience: there are many things to do in Mauritius, but to really get to know it, you have to taste it. The Tourist Board suggests tours designed by Taste Buddies to discover the island, its culture and its way of life through your taste buds. For example, you can choose to take a Street Food Tour in Port Louis, Mahebourg or Grand Bay.
