A new general aviation terminal in Zurich
Zurich Airport is starting a new phase of development for general aviation and business aviation traffic. In the West Zone of the airport, work has begun on the construction of a new dedicated infrastructure, which will include a terminal, a hangar and a reserved apron area.
The project will replace the facilities currently located in the eastern part of the airport, which are no longer adequate for the demand of the sector. In recent years, in fact, the general aviation segment has shown a growing need for suitable hangar space, particularly for larger aircraft. Added to this is the fact that existing infrastructures have reached the end of their operational life cycle.
The new location in the West Zone also meets the needs of airport development and security. The future route of the taxiway around Runway 28, considered an important project for the safety of the airport, will in fact affect the current areas dedicated to general aviation. The implementation of a modern and separate infrastructure will therefore make it possible to reorganise private and business aviation activities within the airport more efficiently.
For passengers traveling by private jet, the new terminal will be designed to offer a more seamless and private experience. The building will include dedicated passenger management spaces and offices for operators, with more functional accesses and a configuration designed to simplify operations before and after the flight.
One of the most important elements will be the proximity to the existing heliport, which will significantly reduce transfer times. This is particularly important for business and high-end customers, for whom speed, discretion and continuity of travel are essential elements of service.
The new infrastructure will also offer land-side parking for passengers and employees, while access to the area will be guaranteed through an extension of Rohrstrasse. The presence of a dedicated apron and new hangar spaces will help improve aircraft management, increasing operational capacity and the quality of services available for general aviation.
Work began on April 14, 2026, and according to the current planning, the new infrastructure is expected to go into operation in spring 2028. Zurich Airport Ltd. will invest around 100 million Swiss francs in the project. The construction of the Zurich General Aviation Terminal is part of the broader development plan for the West Zone of Zurich Airport. The area, owned by Zurich Airport Ltd., covers approximately 16.8 hectares. Several interventions in the West Zone are already underway or in different stages of development. Among these, fourteen new aircraft parking areas have been completed, confirming the strategic role of the area in the future operational structure of the airport.
Zurich Airport (IATA: ZRH, ICAO: LSZH) is one of the best-equipped European airports for general aviation and private flights. For those traveling by jet to/from Zurich, the new terminal promises more efficient service, modern spaces and better integration between aircraft, terminal, handling and ground transfers.
