Rieti at the center of Regional Air Mobility

The "Giuseppe Ciuffelli" airport evolves into a strategic platform between innovation, intermodality and development of the territory

Rieti Airport enters a new phase of development oriented towards Regional Air Mobility (RAM), configuring itself as one of the key hubs of the future Italian regional air mobility network. The project redefines the role of the airport, transforming it from a local infrastructure to an integrated hub, capable of connecting the territories in an intelligent, sustainable and widespread way.

At the heart of the vision is an extensive infrastructure redevelopment program, with total investments of about 13 million euros, which accompanies both the preparation for the 2027 World Gliding Championships and the permanent inclusion of the airport in the RAM network. The objective is twofold: to strengthen the airport's operations and to build a modern platform capable of enabling new forms of short-haul mobility.

Regional Air Mobility: fast connections, closer territories

Regional Air Mobility is based on a model of short-haul city-pair connections, designed to integrate aviation with other transport systems with a view to intermodality and flexibility. In this context, Rieti assumes a priority role as an experimental laboratory, intended to efficiently connect areas that are now marginal with respect to the major traffic routes.

The new paradigm goes beyond the traditional function of a simple place of transit: the airport is rethought as a multifunctional hub, capable of generating economic opportunities, attracting investments and offering advanced services to passengers, operators and local communities.

A RAM-oriented masterplan

The transformation of the airport is divided into three strategic phases, all functional to the development of Regional Air Mobility.

  • The first phase is dedicated to operational preparation, with the leveling of runway no. 3, the construction of a new guesthouse and the redevelopment of hangars and executive offices, essential elements for the management of major events and for future operations.
  • The second phase includes structural interventions on runways no. 1 and no. 2, the construction of a new generation avia workshop and the complete renovation of the parking area, ensuring safety, operational continuity and reception capacity during events and exhibitions.
  • The third phase, following the World Gliding Championships, represents the heart of RAM's vision: new hangars, the activation of the terminal dedicated to Regional Air Mobility and the installation of a photovoltaic system in non-operational areas, strengthening the energy self-sufficiency and sustainable profile of the airport.

From local airport to system infrastructure

With this project, Rieti airport is redefined as an ecosystem open to the territory, in which mobility, services, hospitality and economy coexist in a single infrastructure. Guest quarters, refreshment areas and event spaces contribute to transforming the airport into a reference point not only for aviation, but also for local social and economic life.
