Wizz Air awarded Sustainable Airline of the Year 2025
Wizz Air has been awarded the prestigious title of "Sustainable Airline of the Year 2025" at the Airline Economics Sustainability Awards, the international gala that celebrates aviation's excellence in environmental management, innovation and social responsibility. The winners, selected from among the world's leading carriers, were evaluated through an in-depth analysis of sustainability and emissions data provided by Estuaire, in collaboration with the editorial staff of Airline Economics Plus, and the results of an extensive industry-wide survey.
The jury recognised Wizz Air's concrete and measurable progress in reducing carbon emissions, praising its transparency in reporting and its ambitious plan to achieve Net Zero by 2050, which was presented last April. This is also thanks to the investment in fuel-efficient aircraft and the operational strategies that prioritize environmental performance across the network.
During fiscal year 2025, the company's emissions intensity stood at 52.2 grams of CO₂ per passenger per kilometre, one of the lowest values in the industry. Wizz Air has one of the youngest fleets in the world, consisting of more than 70% of the latest generation Airbus A321neo with an average age of just 4.5 years, equipped with technologies that can guarantee further fuel savings.
The long-term strategy is based on three pillars:
- flights, with an estimated 30% reduction in emissions thanks to fleet renewal and new aeronautical technologies;
- fuel, with the aim of cutting emissions by 53% through the use of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel);
- footprint, with a 4% reduction in emissions resulting from the modernisation of air traffic management.
Wizz Air also aims to reduce carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and use SAF for 10% of its flights over the same time horizon. An ambitious plan that confirms the Hungarian airline as one of the protagonists of the green transition of European air transport, demonstrating that operational efficiency and environmental sustainability can go hand in hand.
