Wizz Air awarded for sustainability
Wizz Air has been named "Most Sustainable Company in the European Low-Cost Airline Industry" at the World Finance Sustainability Awards 2026. The award recognises the airline for its low carbon intensity among European carriers.
In the reporting period, Wizz Air achieved an emissions level of 50.8 grams of CO₂ per paid passenger-kilometre, an indicator used in the aviation industry to measure environmental efficiency with respect to passengers transported and distance travelled.
For travellers, the award signals the airline's commitment to making flights more operationally and environmentally efficient. The result is mainly linked to the composition of the fleet, the high use of the aircraft and the configuration with a high number of seats, which makes it possible to reduce the average impact per passenger.
Wizz Air currently operates 270 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, with an average age of 4.5 years, among the lowest among major European airlines. 75% of the fleet is made up of new generation neo aircraft, designed to consume less fuel than previous models.
Among the most representative aircraft is the Airbus A321neo, configured with 239 seats, the highest density in the single-aisle aircraft segment. This setting allows the airline to carry more passengers on each flight, increasing the overall efficiency of the operation.
The award also recognises Wizz Air's ESG strategy, which is based on fleet renewal, operational efficiency and preparing for increased use of SAF, the sustainable aviation fuel. The company aims to reduce emissions intensity through technological interventions, operational management and long-term initiatives for the decarbonization of air transport and sustainable mobility.
