The new Solar Farm at Fiumicino Airport
The largest self-consumption photovoltaic system in a European airport with 55,000 silicon panels
Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) has inaugurated the new Solar Farm, a state-of-the-art photovoltaic plant, the largest in Europe for self-consumption within an airport border and one of the largest in the world. The facility, located along the east side of Runway 3 of Fiumicino Airport, represents a turning point for the airport's commitment to energy sustainability.
Features of Solar Farm
Designed by ADR and built by Enel in collaboration with Circet, the infrastructure extends for almost 2.5 km and includes around 55,000 monocrystalline silicon panels, with an installed capacity of 22 MWp. This system will be able to produce over 30 million kWh per year, covering a significant part of the airport's energy needs.
Within the next five years, the total capacity will be increased to 60 MWp thanks to the installation of additional plants within the airport perimeter. This capacity will make it possible to meet the annual energy consumption of 30,000 Italian households or to power over a million electric cars.
The investment for this infrastructure amounts to 50 million euros, part of a broader plan of interventions for renewable energy generation and sustainable mobility, with a total budget of more than 200 million euros.

Emission reduction and sustainability
Thanks to the Solar Farm, Fiumicino Airport will reduce its CO2 emissions by more than 11,000 tons per year, contributing significantly to the achievement of the Net Zero Carbon goal by 2030, a full 20 years ahead of industry standards. This project is part of ADR's ESG strategy, supported by the parent company Mundys, whose climate targets are certified by the SBTi (Science Based Target Initiative), in line with the global warming limit of 1.5°C.
The infrastructure will not only reduce dependence on fossil fuels, but also improve energy independence and resilience to market fluctuations.
The presentation event was attended by the top management of ADR - CEO Marco Troncone and President Vincenzo Nunziata - the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the President of ENAC Pierluigi Di Palma, the President of Mundys Giampiero Massolo, the Mayor of Fiumicino Mario Baccini, Francesca Gostinelli - Head of Global Retail at Enel X, the President of the Lazio Regional Council Antonello Aurigemma, the General Manager of Legambiente Giorgio Zampetti.
