Tap Air Portugal certified IEnvA for environmental sustainability
TAP and Portugália Airlines obtain IATA environmental certification. Reducing the environmental impact of operations to promote more responsible aviation
TAP Air Portugal and Portugália Airlines have reached an important milestone in their sustainability journey by achieving IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification. This recognition, based on the ISO 14001 standard, confirms the companies' commitment to adopting responsible environmental practices, marking a milestone in their sustainable management strategy.
A concrete commitment to the environment
The IEnvA certification attests to the implementation of an effective environmental management system, which includes a comprehensive Environmental Policy applied to global flight operations and corporate buildings in Portugal. This milestone reflects TAP's strong commitment to minimising environmental impacts and contributing to more sustainable aviation.
Greener fleet and innovative projects
In 2024, TAP continued to renew its fleet, replacing older aircraft with more modern and fuel-efficient models and CO₂ emissions. At the same time, the company has started the transition of the company and operational fleet to electric and hybrid vehicles, installing electric charging stations on its Campus, also accessible to employees. Among the most significant projects, the "Sustainable Cabin" program stands out, developed in collaboration with Cateringpor. This project promotes the recycling of waste generated on board flights arriving in Lisbon, thanks to the active participation of flight attendants. In addition, TAP has introduced recyclable and reusable tools in the economy class of long-haul flights, reducing the use of single-use materials.
Focus on sustainable fuel
TAP has started using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in line with European directives. In 2024, the level of SAF used is set at 2%, a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of air transport. To support the higher costs of SAF, the company has introduced a SAF surcharge on flights departing from European airports, ranging from two euros in Economy class on regional flights to 24 euros in Business class on intercontinental flights.
