SACBO obtains Level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation
The SACBO Group has obtained recognition from ACI Europe of the fourth level of the Airport Carbon Accreditation certification, a milestone that represents a new significant step in the sustainability path undertaken over ten years ago by the management company of Milan Bergamo Airport.
This result is part of the "Net Zero Roadmap", the decarbonization plan presented in May 2024 to ACI Europe, which provides for the achievement of net zero emissions by 2045 for all airport activities directly managed.
Level 4 certification not only attests to the continuous reduction of the CO₂ footprint from aeronautical activities and airport services, but also recognises the active involvement of stakeholders. This aspect, a fundamental requirement for accreditation, establishes the collaboration of the entire airport community in a gradual and effective decarbonization process.
Level 4 requires airports to work closely with airlines, handlers, suppliers, local authorities and strategic partners, sharing and developing common actions aimed at reducing emissions and transitioning to a low-emission model. SACBO's commitment focuses on reducing not only direct emissions, but also indirect emissions associated with airport operations, aiming for measurable and lasting results. The goal is to overcome the relative reduction logics to arrive at absolute reductions in emissions, with a structural and long-term commitment that reinforces consistency with climate neutrality objectives.
Level 4 represents one of the most advanced phases of the international environmental certification program promoted by ACI (Airports Council International). In addition to monitoring and reducing direct emissions, it requires defining a long-term decarbonization strategy aligned with the global climate goals of the Paris Agreement, with the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
For the president of SACBO, Giovanni Sanga, "this new certification confirms the goodness and effectiveness of the action that SACBO conducts to give substance to an increasingly marked sustainability, which is evidenced by the reduction of CO₂ emissions and also derives from the digitization process and infrastructure works implemented by the airport operator, as well as by the introduction of operational methods, in competition with Enac and Enav, which allow compliance with the deadlines and the reduction of waiting times on the ground with engines running".
Furthermore, it points out that "the previous advancement to the third level of the Airport Carbon Accreditation was obtained in 2020, when, even operating in the period of health emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the SACBO Group gave continuity to its commitment to environmental sustainability".
