Latam reduces over 1 million tons of CO₂ per year

From ground operations and aerodynamic upholstery, lighter seats and reduced cabin weight: efficiency and innovation to cut fuel consumption and emissions without impacting the passenger experience

LATAM Airlines Group avoids more than 1 million tons of CO₂ emissions every year thanks to a series of operational and technological interventions that optimize fuel consumption in daily operations. These measures are often not very visible to flyers, but which together have a concrete impact on the company's environmental footprint.

According to the group, this result is equivalent to the emissions generated by about 200,000 people globally and is the result of an approach that combines data analysis, operational efficiency and technological innovation, without changing the passenger travel experience.

Among the most important initiatives is taxiing with a single motor, applied when operating conditions allow it and always in compliance with strict safety standards. This procedure, known as Single Engine Taxi, allows aircraft to reach the runway or gate after landing using a single engine, reducing more than 100,000 tons of CO₂ per year. For LATAM, this is one of the most effective measures in terms of efficiency.

On the aerodynamic front, the airline is extending the use of AeroSHARK on its Boeing 777-300ER fleet. This coating, inspired by shark skin, employs microscopic structures called riblets, similar to small scales, that align with the airflow and reduce drag. After recording a reduction in fuel consumption close to 1% in operations, LATAM continues with the implementation of the system, which once completed by 2027 is expected to avoid up to 12,000 tons of CO₂ per year.

Aircraft weight is also at the heart of the efficiency program. The new Airbus A320neo and A321neo that entered the fleet from October 2025 are equipped with new generation seats that lighten each aircraft by 200-250 kilograms. Although the reduction per aircraft may seem small, the overall effect is significant: this solution makes it possible to cut about 5,000 tons of CO₂ per year and generates savings of about 1.5 million dollars, while maintaining the same standards of comfort and service for passengers.

Another measure concerns the phasing out of shared overhead screens on some single-aisle aircraft. These systems, which became outdated after the introduction of individual entertainment, added weight without offering any real operational value. Their removal avoids almost 7,000 tons of CO₂ per year and saves more than $2 million.

All these actions are part of the group's Fuel Efficiency Program, which has improved operational efficiency by 7%, avoiding the consumption of more than 2.4 million barrels of fuel per year and preventing more than 6.5 million tons of CO₂ emissions. According to LATAM, this is equivalent to the emissions generated in one year by the company's operations in Ecuador, Colombia and Chile, or those produced by about 1.3 million people globally.

Recognized as one of the five most sustainable airlines in the world and ranked first in the Americas by S&P Global in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) 2025, the group continues its journey towards the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, leveraging innovation, operational efficiency and data-driven decisions.
