Emirates' sustainable amenity kits
From December, those flying with Emirates in Premium Economy and Economy on long-haul connections will find a new collection of sustainable amenity kits on board, designed to make travel more comfortable and to raise awareness among passengers about the protection of biodiversity.
The clutches, soft to the touch and made from organic materials such as cactus, are the result of a collaboration with United for Wildlife, the initiative founded by His Royal Highness Prince William to combat illegal wildlife trafficking.
Each kit recalls one of the planet's key ecosystems – sea, sky, forest or desert – and is decorated with hand-drawn illustrations that tell the story of the threatened species depicted, lit up by a dedicated information card. Among the animals represented are pangolins, green turtles, Bengal tigers, Bornean orangutans, Arabian gazelles, Cape vultures, blue sharks and many other endangered species.
For the first time, the Premium Economy kits include products from Aveda, a botanical brand famous for skin care: a lip balm, a moisturizing hand cream and a face lotion enrich the contents together with soft socks, a mask, earplugs and a Colgate dental set. The socks and masks are made entirely of post-consumer recycled polyester, while the cards and packaging come from FSC certified paper. These kits, available on long-duration night flights, celebrate several threatened species, including glass frogs, chimpanzees, geckos, totoaba, and African grey parrots.
The new Economy Class collection maintains the focus on comfort and sustainability: each clutch contains soft socks, mask, earplugs and Colgate dental set, with recycled materials and certified packaging. Here, too, the illustrations tell about endangered animals such as western gorillas, Bornean orangutans, Arabian oryx, gibbons, peregrine falcons, green turtles and desert foxes.
On board, Travellers can also learn more about the work of United for Wildlife thanks to the "Guardians" series, available on the ice entertainment system, which documents the stories of rangers engaged in wildlife protection.
The initiative confirms Emirates' commitment to protecting the environment and combating illegal animal trafficking, a priority of the airline's Environmental Sustainability Framework. Emirates SkyCargo enforces a total ban on the carriage of trophies of protected species, while the airline has achieved IATA IEnvA Stage One and IEnvA Illegal Wildlife Trade Module certifications, reinforcing a path towards increasingly responsible operating practices.
