Smokers Point at Cagliari airport

Outside the Arrivals and Departures areas, the new ashtrays allow cigarette butts to be collected and recycled, transforming them into reusable plastic, thanks to a circular economy and environmental sustainability project

At Cagliari Airport , the Smokers Points, special ashtrays created by RE-CIG® for the recovery and recycling of cigarette butts, make their debut, with the aim of combating the phenomenon of littering - the abandonment of small waste - and promoting sustainable behavior.

Available from 6 May 2025 at the dedicated smoking areas outside the Arrivals and Departures terminals, the Smokers Points are easily identifiable thanks to the new signage created by SOGAER, the airport management company.

The collaboration between SOGAER and RE-CIG®, the first and only company in Italy and Europe authorized to treat cigarette butts, aims to reduce the environmental impact of this highly polluting waste. Through patented technology, cigarette butts are transformed into recycled cellulose acetate, a reusable plastic polymer to make a wide range of objects, such as eyeglass temples, films, synthetic fabrics and industrial components.

The initiative is part of a broader project of circular economy and environmental innovation, aimed at transforming waste into a resource and making Cagliari Airport increasingly oriented towards environmental responsibility and sustainability.
