Iceland in winter: journey to the spectacular ice caves

Between Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón and Langjökull, three experiences to enter the heart of the glaciers between blue tunnels, excursions and arctic landscapes

Winter in Iceland offers the chance to experience one of the country's most spectacular natural experiences: entering the ice caves that form inside the great glaciers. For the 2026/27 season, several natural cavities are accessible between Vatnajökull and Langjökull, each with different shapes, colors and characteristics.

These environments are constantly changing. Caves are shaped by meltwater, frost and the movement of glaciers themselves, so each season can create different tunnels, chambers and passages. A cave that can be visited today may change its appearance in the following months or no longer be accessible next year. For those planning a trip to Iceland between autumn and spring, ice caves can therefore become one of the most interesting stops on the itinerary.

Icelandic tour operator Arctic Adventures, with over 40 years of experience, has published new photographs of three extraordinary caves: the deep blue passages of Skaftafell, the unusual ice formations of the Crystal Ice Cave near the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the turquoise tunnels of the Neptune Ice Cave in Langjökull.

Skaftafell and the Blue Ice Cave
In southeast Iceland, Skaftafell is one of the most popular spots for glacier hiking. The Blue Ice Cave, on the Falljökull Glacier, features narrow passages, smooth walls, and shades ranging from light blue to deep turquoise. In some places, the ice also incorporates darker layers of volcanic material, creating strong color contrasts.
The visit is normally combined with a guided walk on the glacier, crossing crevasses and natural formations before reaching the cave. The experience lasts about four hours and is suitable for Travellers aged 8 and over, with safety equipment included. The season generally runs from October to April, depending on ice and weather conditions.

Crystal Ice Cave near Jökulsárlón
Another particularly striking experience is on Breiðamerkurjökull, a tongue of the great Vatnajökull glacier. The Crystal Ice Cave features deep blue ceilings, natural arches, and rounded formations that appear to overlap like layers of sculpted ice. Some sections are more transparent, allowing natural light to penetrate the cave, creating very different lighting effects throughout the day.
The starting point is the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland's most famous natural attractions. Here, large icebergs break off from the glacier and cross the lagoon before reaching the ocean. Just opposite is also the famous Diamond Beach, where blocks of ice can settle on the black sand.
From Jökulsárlón you can reach the glacier with modified off-road vehicles. The excursion lasts approximately between two and three hours and is also open to children aged 6 and over. Visits are scheduled from the autumn season until mid-April, conditions permitting.

Neptune Ice Cave in Langjökull
In western Iceland, the protagonist is Langjökull, the second largest glacier in the country. Here is the Neptune Ice Cave, a natural cave characterized by long corridors of turquoise ice, smooth, almost transparent walls and darker layers of sediment visible below the surface.
The line-up for the 2026/27 season has been identified in a slightly different position than the previous year, further demonstrating how dynamic these environments are.
The experience combines cave exploration with a snowmobile excursion on Langjökull Glacier. Departures are available from Reykjavík and the Geysir Center, along the Golden Circle. The overall duration varies according to the starting point and itinerary, while the indicative season runs from November until the end of April or early May.

Why caves change every year
Natural caves are formed when meltwater flows inside the glacier, creating tunnels and chambers below the surface. With the arrival of low temperatures, some of these passages can stabilize and become accessible. However, the glacier continues to move, compress and transform, so walls, ceilings and openings can change even during the same season. For this reason, accessibility is constantly checked and can vary depending on the weather and ice conditions.

Which cave to choose during a trip to Iceland
The three experiences offer different ways to approach the glaciers. Skaftafell is suitable for those who want to combine a visit to the cave with a real excursion on the ice.
Jökulsárlón and the Crystal Ice Cave are particularly suitable for those traveling along the south coast who want to combine the glacial lagoon, Diamond Beach and the exploration of Vatnajökull in the same itinerary.
Langjökull is an interesting choice for those departing from Reykjavík or the Golden Circle and want to add a snowmobile adventure to the cave experience.

In all cases, the main charm remains the possibility of entering a temporary and unrepeatable natural environment. The ice caves are constantly changing and it is precisely this transformation that makes each visit different from the previous one.
