Tarot exhibition in Bergamo: at the Accademia Carrara a journey between art and divination
From the Colleoni Deck to Surrealism, the largest overview ever made on divination cards in collaboration with The Morgan Library in New York
The Accademia Carrara in Bergamo is preparing to host, from February 27 to June 2, 2026, an unprecedented exhibition event dedicated to the charm and history of tarot cards. The exhibition, entitled "Tarot. The origins, the cards, the fortune" and curated by Paolo Plebani, is the result of a prestigious international collaboration with The Morgan Library & Museum in New York.
From court entertainment to modern divination Theproject provides the most important overview ever made of these cards, analyzing their evolution from a refined aristocratic pastime in the courts of northern Italy in the fifteenth century to a popular game, up to its transformation into a tool for predicting the future in the eighteenth century. The themes covered explore the symbolic power of the tarot, which has achieved extraordinary cultural fortune in the twentieth century and beyond.
In a journey through great masters and contemporary artists, the exhibition is divided into seven thematic sections: The court at play, Petrarch's Triumphs, The Tarot of the Visconti, The Tarot Library, The Colleoni Deck, From Triumphs to Divinatory Tarot and Artist's Tarot.
The public will be able to admire very rare pieces, such as the cards of the Colleoni Deck (1455-1480) made by Bonifacio Bembo and Antonio Cicognara, belonging to the Carrara collection. The iconographic journey continues up to the suggestions of Surrealism with Victor Brauner and the contemporary testimonies of masters of the caliber of Irving Penn, Niki de Saint Phalle, Francesco Clemente and Leonora Carrington.
Mondo Carrara, an inclusive and open museum: the Tarot exhibition is part of the two-year "Mondo Carrara" program, an initiative that combines academic research and major popular themes to reveal unpublished works and stories from the museum collections. Founded in 1796 by Giacomo Carrara, the Academy is now a dynamic institution that houses absolute masterpieces by masters such as Mantegna, Bellini, Botticelli, Raphael and Titian.
The visitor experience will be enriched by the possibility of accessing the PwC Gardens, a vast redeveloped green space that puts culture and nature in direct dialogue, confirming the museum's commitment to inclusiveness and accessibility for all types of public.
