Rome Fiumicino awarded the best airport in Europe by ACI EUROPE

Leonardo da Vinci wins the Best Airport Award for the eighth time since 2018 in the over 40 million passengers category and looks forward to a €9 billion development plan

Rome Fiumicino has been awarded as the best airport in Europe at the ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards 2026, in the category of airports with over 40 million passengers. The award was presented in Prague during the ACI EUROPE Annual Congress and confirms Leonardo da Vinci's role among the main European hubs for quality of service, innovation, operational efficiency and sustainability.

For Fiumicino airport , this is the eighth award since 2018 and the fifth consecutive in this category. The award was given by an independent jury composed of institutional representatives of the European aviation sector, including the European Commission, EUROCONTROL, EASA, ECAC and SESAR Joint Undertaking.

The award comes in a particularly significant year for the Roman airport. In 2025, Fiumicino exceeded the threshold of 51 million passengers for the first time, strengthening its position as Italy's main international gateway and as a strategic airport for tourist flows to Rome and the country.

The result also confirms the path already recognized internationally: in February Leonardo da Vinci had obtained the title of Best European Airport as part of ACI World's Airport Service Quality program, based directly on passenger opinions. Added to this is the positioning in the Skytrax World Top Ten, which consolidates the image of Fiumicino among the most popular airports globally.

For Travellers, the recognition enhances an airport model oriented towards the quality of the experience at all stages of the journey: from terminal services to flow management, from digital transformation to infrastructure sustainability. An increasingly central element for those who depart, arrive or stop in Rome, especially in a context of strong growth in international demand.

Looking to the future, Aeroporti di Roma is focusing on a 9 billion euro Sustainable Development Plan, designed to accompany an estimated traffic demand of up to 100 million passengers by 2046. The Masterplan aims to strengthen Italy's connectivity, support tourism and project Fiumicino among the main hubs of the Western world.

The recognition therefore confirms the value of the "Fiumicino model", based on investments, innovation, operational quality and attention to the passenger. For Rome and Italy, Leonardo da Vinci is consolidating itself as a key infrastructure for international mobility, tourism and the competitiveness of the country system.
