Palermo: record number of passengers in July
Falcone Borsellino International Airport has largely exceeded one million passengers, marking a significant growth compared to previous years
Palermo's Falcone Borsellino International Airport recorded an all-time record in July, welcoming over one million passengers. The milestone was reached with the arrival of the passenger Sabrina from Munich on Lufthansa flight LH 1914.
Data from the planning and control office of Gesap, the airport management company, indicate that July will close with 1,018,684 passengers, marking an increase of 4.09% compared to the same month in 2023 and 26.95% compared to 2022. The number of flights also grew by 4.97%, with an average of 149 passengers per flight. The peak day was July 5, with 38,245 passengers.
The most popular international destinations include Paris, Munich, London, Barcelona, Geneva, Krakow and Vienna, while domestically , Rome, Milan Malpensa and Linate, Bergamo, Naples, Verona and Bologna were the favourites. International traffic reached 385 thousand passengers, representing 37.68% of the July total and 30.37% of the annual traffic until July, with over one and a half million travelers.
In the first seven months of 2024, Palermo airport totaled 5,026,041 passengers, an increase of 9.71% compared to the same period in 2023. The number of flights increased by 10.9%. To celebrate the millionth passenger, Gesap organized a ceremony, during which the president Salvatore Burrafato and the general manager Massimo Abbate gave a shopping card to be used in the airport's duty free shops to Sabrina.
Burrafato commented: "Reaching one million passengers in just one month is an extraordinary result that rewards the management choices of our board. The passenger terminal is now a welcoming and well-organized facility, and we will continue to improve it in the coming years to support structural and sustainable growth." He also attributed part of the success to the good management influenced by the presence of Vito Riggio, underlining the importance of the work of all airport employees for the consolidation of the airport's strategic and international position in the national context.
