Bologna Airport introduces bodycams for security

First airport trial in Italy to protect staff, passengers and airport infrastructure

Bologna Marconi Airport further strengthens security measures by launching an innovative experiment: from next week some employees will be equipped with bodycams during service. This is the first initiative of its kind at an Italian airport, designed to increase the protection of staff, passengers and airport infrastructure.

In recent years, the Bologna airport has invested in a structured way in the control of its infrastructures, both inside the terminal and on the entire airport grounds. Despite a decrease recorded in 2025 compared to 2024, incidents of aggression against workers remain significant: 142 cases in 2024 and 96 in 2025, concentrated mainly in check-in areas and boarding gates, and attributable to aggressive behavior of passengers and airport users.

Areas outside the terminal also require increasingly advanced controls to ensure operational safety. In this process, Bologna airport has introduced video surveillance, GPS and remote alert systems since 2017 and in 2022 it signed an anti-aggression protocol with institutions and ENAC. The trial of bodycams represents a new and further step in strengthening airport safety.

In a first phase of testing, 7 bodycams will be used; When fully operational, indicatively from the beginning of the summer, the number will rise to about 40 devices. The bodycams will be assigned to AdB employees engaged in activities considered particularly sensitive, including: security; workshop and automatic baggage handling system; aircraft movement area; airport operations managers; parking area and activities carried out on roads or in areas without fixed supervision.

The employees involved will only be trained and use bodycams during the service. The devices will remain on stand-by and will record audio and video only in the event of concrete risks, signaling the activation with a red LED. The images, saved in an encrypted way and not connected in real time to the police, will be accessible only to authorized personnel and can be used for security purposes, asset protection and investigations with criminal relevance.

AdB's stated objective is twofold: to prevent and discourage aggression and, at the same time, to innovate the methods of controlling the airport infrastructure, continuously improving the safety and efficiency of operations.

The initiative was officially presented by the CEO and General Manager Nazareno Ventola, together with the Director of People and Organization Development Marco Verga and the Director of Airport Operations Paolo Sgroppo, in the presence of the company trade union representatives, confirming the shared and structured approach adopted by Bologna Airport (BLQ).
