easyJet strengthens its presence in Italy
New bases at Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino in 2025 consolidating Italy as its second main market
easyJet has confirmed a major expansion in Italy with the opening of two new operational bases in Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino. The announcement comes following the European Commission's decision to appoint the British company as a remedy taker for short-haul flights as part of the agreement between ITA Airways and Lufthansa.
Starting in spring 2025, easyJet will base five aircraft at Milan Linate and three at Rome Fiumicino airport, thus expanding its network of destinations and offering new travel opportunities at competitive prices for Italian passengers. The company expects to create around 250 direct jobs in the new bases and a significant strengthening of its presence in the Italian market.
With this expansion plan, Italy becomes easyJet's second largest market, which will operate a total of 38 aircraft at its four Italian bases: Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Rome Fiumicino and Naples. The company expects to carry over 21 million passengers per year, serving 20 Italian airports and strengthening Italy's role in the European air transport landscape.
The opening of the base at Milan Linate adds a new piece to the company's offer in the Lombard capital, where easyJet has already carried over 100 million passengers to and from Milan Malpensa since 1998. At Rome Fiumicino, on the other hand, the expansion will improve connectivity with the rest of Europe, offering Roman travelers a wider range of flight options.
Kenton Jarvis, easyJet's CFO and future CEO, said: "We are proud to have been chosen as the short-haul remedy taker in Milan and Rome. This will ensure an increasingly competitive Italian market, with advantageous rates and new destinations for consumers. We look forward to welcoming passengers to our new services."
Lorenzo Lagorio, Country Manager of easyJet Italy, also underlined the importance of the expansion: "We have contributed to the democratization of air transport in Italy and we are excited to strengthen our presence at Linate and Fiumicino. This allows us to grow further, create jobs and offer our customers an even wider range of travel options."
This expansion strengthens the strategic role of Linate and Fiumicino airports, which become key hubs for short-haul air transport. The new slots obtained by easyJet will allow greater competitiveness, benefiting both travelers and the local tourism sector. With these innovations, easyJet confirms its commitment to making air travel more accessible and convenient for Italian passengers, further strengthening its position as a leader in the European low-cost sector.
