TAP accelerates on long-haul from Porto
Long-haul becomes the fulcrum of TAP Air Portugal's development strategy from Porto. Portugal's national airline has announced a significant strengthening of intercontinental operations from Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, confirming the increasingly central role of Portugal's northern airport in its global network.
During the winter season, TAP will operate 13 weekly flights to four long-haul destinations from Porto to Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, New York and Luanda, as part of a total offer of 135 weekly international connections. A network that consolidates the transatlantic axis and strengthens historical and cultural ties with Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa, while intercepting a growing demand for business and leisure traffic.
The long-haul strategy continues in 2026: from 1 July, the new Porto–Praia (Cape Verde) flight will enter service, with three weekly frequencies, while from next winter the Porto–Boston connection will become operational all year round, marking a further step forward in the stabilization of the intercontinental offer. Direct Porto-Tel Aviv flights are also scheduled to be launched, with four weekly frequencies, expanding Porto's projection to the Middle East.
As part of the three-year strategic plan, TAP confirmed its intention to open new intercontinental routes and increase frequencies on existing long-haul routes, strengthening the competitiveness of Porto port compared to the main European hubs.
To support this long-haul growth, the airline will invest in the construction of a Maintenance & Engineering Hub at Porto Airport, with capacity for two A321 aircraft (or equivalent). The infrastructure, operational by 2028, will make it possible to directly support the fleet also used on the new generation intercontinental routes and will lead to the creation of about 200 highly qualified jobs.
