Qatar Airways acquires 25% of Virgin Australia
The investment strengthens collaboration between the airlines, offering new connecting routes and benefits to travellers and promotes sustainability initiatives
Qatar Airways Group has announced its intention to acquire a 25% minority stake in Virgin Australia, consolidating the strategic partnership launched in 2022. This investment represents an important step in increasing competition in Australian aviation, offering consumers more choice, better fares and enhanced long-haul services.
Through the expansion of codeshare agreements, Virgin Australia will be able to launch new international routes from Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney to Doha, connecting travellers with more than 100 new destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa across Qatar Airways' global network.
The agreement will also offer additional benefits to members of Qatar Airways' Velocity and Privilege Club loyalty programmes, increasing opportunities to earn and redeem points. In addition to supporting Virgin Australia's growth and competitiveness, the investment focuses on sustainability initiatives, including the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the development of Western Sydney's aviation ecosystem.
The agreement also has a positive impact on the Australian economy, generating jobs and opportunities for economic growth, not only in the aviation sector but also in the tourism sector.
