New York JFK Terminal 4 renews duty free

At John F. Kennedy Airport, new duty-free and retail areas in T4: the project will bring new brands, experiential activities and an increasingly New York City-inspired proposition

Terminal 4 of New York's JFK Airport is preparing to renew its commercial offer for passengers. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFKIAT, the terminal operator, have announced the selection of JFK T4 Retail Partners LLC to rethink T4's duty free and specialty retail concessions.

The new partnership brings together ARI, one of the world's leading travel retailers, International Shoppes, a leading duty free and specialty retailer based in Queens, and a group of local partners and small businesses. The initiative is part of JFKIAT's T4 North Star strategic vision, the plan that guides the transformation of the $1.5 billion terminal and aims to make Terminal 4 a space increasingly aligned with JFK Airport's broader strategy to develop as a world-class global gateway.

For passengers, the change will result in a completely reimagined business experience. The announced concept combines partnerships with premium brands, dedicated activations, clearer communication of the value of products and a culture of service built on hospitality, innovation and identity pride. The goal is to offer not only airport shopping, but a more immersive experience consistent with the international and urban character of New York.

According to the release, Travellers will find exclusive product launches and a curated selection of local offerings at the airport highlighting the best of New York City. JFK T4 Retail Partners will formally take over the management of Terminal 4's duty free from 1 April, while the store renovation programme, the introduction of new brands and experiential activations will be developed progressively over the course of 2026 and beyond.

The choice reflects JFKIAT's desire to work with partners strongly oriented towards customer experience excellence. ARI operates duty free and duty paid stores in 12 countries, while International Shoppes is considered a pioneer in the U.S. duty free market, having introduced the first and only cash-and-carry duty free system in the U.S. in 1998. Together, these companies will bring to Terminal 4 a combination of relationships with global, national and local brands, commercial innovation, operational expertise and local knowledge.

One of the central elements of the project will be the new New York Duty Free concept, which will be introduced at Terminal 4 thanks to this partnership. The idea is to further strengthen the terminal's New York identity, enhancing the city's global role but also its craftsmanship, creativity and network of small businesses. For the passenger, this means living an airport shopping experience that is more linked to the place, less standardized and more representative of the soul of New York.

The project also continues the path already started by JFKIAT to integrate local companies into the commercial landscape of the terminal. Last year, a partnership with HMSHost was announced to involve seven small local businesses as joint venture partners in the T4 concession activities, with the aim of enriching the restaurant, beverage and retail offer with a strong city footprint. With the new agreement with JFK T4 Retail Partners, this orientation is further strengthened.

For those travelling through JFK Terminal 4, this is a change that aims to improve the airport experience. In fact, T4 is the busiest terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport and plays a central role in welcoming passengers arriving in New York from all over the world. In this context, a more accurate, distinctive and locally rooted commercial offer becomes an integral part of travel for travel retail.

The announcement also comes at a symbolic time for JFKIAT, which celebrates 25 years of managing Terminal 4. During this time, the company has led the development of the terminal by focusing on innovation, collaboration with partners, a community-oriented vision and a customer-centric approach.

As part of the T4 North Star vision, the ongoing work is taking the terminal to a premium level, a greater focus on hospitality, a more direct relationship with passengers and a more select commercial proposition. For those departing, arriving or transiting through Terminal 4 of John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), the renewal of duty free and specialized travel retail aims to make the airport experience more modern and consistent with New York's international profile.
