Tre Primitivi: Alessandro Mendini interprets Alpi

A design with literary imagination, world of art and images, breaking way from the rational, traditional use of colors and materials
The three exclusive pieces of furniture - Qfwfq, Ayl and Luna & Sole - designed by Alessandro Mendini in 2018 for the ALPI exhibition Tre Primitivi, take their names from the protagonists of the Cosmicomic by Italo Calvino, “Without Colors.” Three archaic forms made with the Pointillisme COL and Pointillisme B/N wood by Atelier Mendini with Alex Mocika.

A re-edition of the first wood made by Alpi for the Atelier Mendini in 1991, Pointillisme COL and B/N and re-proposed in two versions, one colored “solar” and one in different shades of grey “lunar”. Polychrome dots and hints of pointillism have been reproduced in the Alpi wood, a product of the company’s sartorial culture which enabled this design to be realized preserving its powdery and intangible character.

The evanescent and immaterial nature of the paintings of pointillists like Paul Signac and George Seurat, and the reflections on color and light in Italo Calvino’s story, have been represented in the exhibition through the archaic monumentality of Alessandro Mendini’s furniture.
