HondaJet Echelon, Honda's new light jet towards its first flight in 2028
Honda Aircraft Company has completed the first wing structure for the HondaJet Echelon test unit, marking a new advance in the development of the future light jet. The updated schedule calls for the first flight in 2028, followed by type certification and first delivery in 2031.
The new timeline takes into account adjustments related to first-tier suppliers and development activities still in progress. In parallel, the industrial program continues to advance: according to Honda Aircraft, more than 70% of the components needed for the first assembly are already available, while more than 88,400 square feet, about 8,200 square meters, have been prepared for the production of the Echelon.
Compared to the current HondaJet HA-420, the new model will feature a more spacious cabin and greater passenger capacity. The stated goal is also to make the Echelon the world's first light jet certified for single-pilot operations capable of covering transcontinental routes in the United States.
Structural testing and system integration
In parallel with the construction of the first wing, Honda Aircraft has completed testing of key structural components and is continuing integration activities at its Integrated Test Facility.
The facility has a fully operational cockpit test environment, which is used to verify the operation and interaction of the main systems before the start of the flight campaign. A second cockpit is also being commissioned and will serve to expand the evaluation and validation activities on the ground. This phase will allow for as many verifications as possible to be brought forward before the first flight scheduled for 2028.
The technologies planned for the HondaJet Echelon
The Echelon will take some of the solutions already associated with the HondaJet family, adapting them to an aircraft of greater size and range. These include the Over the Wing Engine Mount system, with the engines installed above the wings, flanked by a composite fuselage and advanced avionics.
The planned equipment also includes autothrottle, Emergency Autoland, automatic braking, Runway Overrun Awareness and Alerting System (ROAAS) and Advanced Steering Augmentation System (ASAS).
The integration of these technologies is also linked to the expected ability to operate with a single pilot, one of the central elements in the positioning of Echelon on the business aviation market.
Over 530 letters of intent
Honda Aircraft also announced that it has collected more than 530 letters of intent for the new model. The figure highlights the commercial interest already developed around the program, several years before the planned entry into service. With the completion of the first wing structure, the HondaJet Echelon therefore enters a more advanced stage of its development. The next major milestones remain the first flight in 2028, type certification and the start of the first deliveries in 2031.
