King Khalid International Airport, known as King Khalid International Airport (RUH), was opened in 1983 by His Royal Highness King Khalid and is located in Saudi Arabia about 35 kilometers north of Riyadh.
The airport consists of five passenger terminals and Terminal 5 is the most recent, inaugurated in 2016, and used by the airlines Saudia Airlines (Saudi Arabia's national airline), Flyadeal and Flynas for domestic flights. Terminal 5 is operated by Irish airport operator Dublin Airport Authority (DAA International) and is the first privately operated airport terminal in Saudi Arabia.
The airport is equipped with one of the tallest air traffic control towers in the world (81 meters on 19 floors), two parallel runways and houses a Royal Mosque with stained glass windows made by the British architectural artist Brian Clarke and a 'Royal Terminal' embellished with fountains and gardens for the use of government officials, state guests and members of the Saudi royal family.
The airport complex also includes a VIP Terminal, as well as shops, restaurants, cafes, airline offices, government offices, a nearby hotel (Riyadh Airport Marriott Hotel), car rental counters, banks and other passenger services.
To the north, runway number 1 houses a passenger terminal for General Aviation, for use by private aircraft, which can be reached via a reserved access road.
Riyadh Airport, owned and operated by the state-owned Riyadh Airports Company, is one of the most important and busiest airports in the Middle East. Its development is part of the King Salman International Airport project, the new airport announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and named after the current ruler, King Salman. The plan calls for the construction of a new airport infrastructure around the current airport, with six terminals and six runways, intended to replace the existing airport. The project, designed by Foster + Partners, focuses on sustainability and efficiency criteria. Once completed, the new airport will be able to handle 120 million passengers per year after 2030, with the goal of reaching 185 million passengers by 2050.
