Norwegian Air

Founded in 1993, Norwegian began operating as a low-cost airline in 2002 with a fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft. In the following years, the brand (known as Norwegian or Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA) established itself internationally through short-haul flights across Europe and expanded into long-haul markets, serving destinations in the United States, Asia, and South America.

Starting in 2018, the airline redefined its strategy by focusing on core destinations and adjusting its operational capacity in response to evolving global trends and passenger demand. In 2021, Norwegian announced a streamlined corporate structure with an exclusive focus on short-haul operations. Today, it operates an extensive network connecting Norway, the Nordic countries, and key European destinations.

The airline’s fleet consists of Boeing 737 aircraft, including the Boeing 737-800, renowned for onboard comfort with Boeing Sky interiors and available WiFi. These are complemented by the newer Boeing 737 MAX 8, which offers greater fuel efficiency and a modern, sustainable travel experience.

Headquartered in Fornebu, near Oslo, Norwegian is one of the leading airline groups in the Nordic region. In addition to Norwegian Air Shuttle, the group acquired Widerøe in 2024, Norway’s oldest airline and the largest regional carrier in Scandinavia. This acquisition aims to create an integrated network between the two airlines, enhancing seamless air travel.

Norwegian Air Shuttle, the group’s main airline, carried 22.6 million passengers in 2024, operating a fleet of 86 Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

Widerøe primarily serves regional airports with short runways across Norway, operating both commercial routes and PSO (Public Service Obligation) routes. In 2024, Widerøe transported 3.8 million passengers with a fleet of 49 aircraft, including 46 Bombardier Dash 8 and 3 Embraer E190-E2. Widerøe Ground Handling provides ground services at 41 Norwegian airports.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of Norwegian’s strategy, with a firm commitment to significantly reducing carbon emissions through investment in the development and use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
