Nature in Baden-Württemberg
An area of Germany with the forests of the Black Forest, Stuttgart and Lake Constance
The region of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany borders France and Switzerland and is easily accessible from Italy by car, train or plane. One of the most populous lands in the country, it boasts several records: it is the region known for its excellent cultural offer, as well as for its long spa tradition, wines and gourmet cuisine. It is one of the most visited areas in Germany and offers a wide variety of views and landscapes, ranging from the unspoilt forests of the Black Forest to lively Stuttgart and Lake Constance.
In warm weather, nature comes back to the fore in Baden-Württemberg. In the sunny southern part of Germany , nature is at home and in spring it puts on a show. Not only parks and gardens that awaken, but also green adventures: walks, excursions, bike rides or trips for a farm holiday. Parks and protected oases, mountain pastures, rivers, lakes, gorges and waterfalls, fields, woods and vineyards for a regenerating full immersion in the green.
Nature to explore and experience in Baden-Württemberg
During the day, as well as at night. Yes, because the green choice in Baden-Württemberg starts with the accommodation. Not only hotels surrounded by greenery and eco-sustainable accommodation facilities, but a wide choice of farmhouses, even unusual ones. Like the Hofgut Hopfenburg in Münsingen, a family-friendly agri-campsite . In addition to traditional apartments and accommodation, it offers original independent living solutions scattered throughout the fields. You can choose to stay in a gypsy wagon, an Indian tipi, a circus wagon, a safari tent or a Mongolian yurt.
There are many proposals for activities in nature in Baden-Württemberg: sensory walks or with donkeys, creative recycling workshops, DIY and zero-kilometer cooking, excursions in the light of dawn or in the darkness of the caves, projections and conferences on ecological themes, insights into agritourism activities, wood carving lessons, courses on flora and fauna, trekking with picnics, photo safaris, stargazing, etc.
Among the experiences in the green of nature, not to be missed in Baden-Württemberg is the Baumwipfelpfad, in the Black Forest: a unique opportunity to explore the famous forest region. An educational path, along a walkway and up a wooden tower that - among imposing firs, pines and beeches - extends for over a kilometer, 20 meters high. Which become 40, if you reach the top of the panoramic tower. The scenery from up there is beautiful, lush and oxygenating. In the Black Forest , wild camping is prohibited, but there are six new trekking camps available to tourists . The pitches are equipped only with a fireplace and composting toilet, the rest is wild nature. Like a free campsite , but regulated, respecting the environment. The fields, a day's walk from each other, are hidden in the woods and GPS coordinates are needed to find them. Info: www.naturparkschwarzwald.de - www.tourism-bw.com
The island of Mainau
Between the infinite shades of the park that covers it and those of Lake Constance that surrounds it, the garden island of Mainau is an incredible palette of greens, dotted with the colors of different flowers. To the chromatic spectacle of nature, the blues of the sky, the yellow of the sun, the gold of the stars and the white of the moon are added. For example, the 2019 theme for the island's gardeners was "Sun, Moon, and Stars." The celestial bodies have a great influence, not only on men, but also on nature and its cycles. Think of the importance of the sun for photosynthesis, the phases of the moon for sowing, the dictates of biodynamic cultivation, etc. There is an ancient and indissoluble bond between heaven and earth, which is also reflected in the names of some plants: sunflower, astranzia, astar, edelweiss or moonflower (Ipomea bianca). Themed flower beds, green installations, exhibitions and even zodiac menus in restaurants, season after season, will therefore celebrate this theme. At the same time, the natural vegetative cycle of the island will give a firmament of blooms: orchids, tulips, rhododendrons, roses, perennial shrubs, dahlias. Palm trees and lemons will give a Mediterranean inspiration.
Fun for the whole family
A touch of nobility and Nordic atmosphere, thanks to the traditions perpetuated by the Swedish counts Bernadotte - with a series of festivals and folkloristic and cultural events of great appeal. Mainau is a large natural museum under the sky, but it is also a paradise for children, who go crazy here between explorations in the green, playground, themed areas and adventure spaces. Don't miss the butterfly house, one of the largest in Germany, with over 120 species fluttering through the tropical vegetation. Then there is the fantastic Wasserwelt playground: a body of water complete with an island in the center, a pile-dwelling village, pirogues and rafts for a dip in prehistoric times. The Blumis Uferwelt themed area, dedicated to children between 3 and 6 years old, is a sort of playground of sand, wood and water where they can try their hand at various challenges. Admission to the family-friendly island is free for children up to 12 years old. Info: www.mainau.de - visit.baden-baden.de
