Changi Airport, an oasis between nature and innovation: from the bamboo grove to the mangrove aquarium

Singapore hub enriches the passenger experience with new green spaces and living installations that tell the story of Asian biodiversity

At Changi Airport, nature is an integral part of the travel experience. In addition to iconic indoor gardens such as the Butterfly Garden and the Cactus Garden, Singapore Airport recently opened two new attractions designed to bring passengers closer to Asian biodiversity: the Bamboo Grove and the Mangrove Aquarium.

The Bamboo Grove, born from a redevelopment project on the edge of Terminal 2, is a small bamboo forest created as a stopping point along the Changi Airport Connector, frequented by cyclists and joggers. Embellished with species such as Black Bamboo, Pot-bellied Buddha Bamboo and Giant Bamboo, which can reach 30 meters in height, the garden offers visitors a moment of calm and well-being away from the hectic pace of travel.

Also in Terminal 2, in the departures transit area, Changi presented its first mangrove aquarium: a saltwater tank that houses about 30 aquatic and intertidal species, including mud jumping fish, horseshoe crabs, hermit crabs and decorator crabs. Inspired by Singapore's coastal ecosystems and nearby Changi Creek, the aquarium offers passengers the chance to get up close and personal with local marine wildlife in an immersive and comfortable setting.

Both installations combine landscaping, environmental education and innovation: the Bamboo Grove reinterprets the concept of the airport garden as a space for well-being, while the mangrove aquarium brings a fragment of Singapore's coastal ecosystem into the terminal. Together, they confirm Changi Airport's vocation to be not only a transit hub, but a real living park, where nature becomes part of the travel experience.
