Wizz Air inaugurates Palermo base with 18 routes to 13 countries
Wizz Air has inaugurated its new operational base at Palermo Airport (PMO), strengthening its presence in Sicily with an important growth plan that includes two Airbus A321neo already based at the airport, a third aircraft arriving from 6 September and a network set to reach 18 routes to 13 countries by the end of 2026.
The inauguration ceremony took place at the Palermo airport with the direct flight to Turin, symbolically chosen to underline the importance of domestic connections in the company's strategy.
From Palermo, Wizz Air now connects Milan Malpensa, Bologna, Venice, Turin, Rome Fiumicino and Pisa, offering a wide choice of flights for both business and leisure travelers or family reunions.
With the opening of the base, new international connections are launched with flights to Tel Aviv and Sharm el-Sheikh, in addition to the already operational connections to VladimirModlin, Bratislava, Belgrade, Sofia and Skopje.
The investment will be further enhanced from September with the arrival of the third Airbus A321neo based in Palermo, which will allow the opening of new routes to Rome Fiumicino, Barcelona, Prague, Marrakech and Dortmund, while from 25 October the new connection with Pisa will also be introduced. From 27 October, the flight to Tirana will also become part of the network.
Thanks to this expansion, Wizz Air will make available over 1.3 million seats to and from Palermo during 2026, becoming the airport's second carrier with an expected market share of around 16%. The destinations of Prague, Marrakech and Dortmund will be served exclusively by the company.
The opening of the base will also have positive effects on the territory. The investment will in fact allow the creation of 120 direct jobs and will support over 1,050 employees in related industries, with benefits for the aviation, tourism, logistics and services sectors.
The initiative is part of Wizz Air's growth strategy in Italy, where the company operates seven bases and a network of 329 routes to 33 countries. For the 2026 summer season, the carrier offers over 20.3 million seats, confirming the Italian market as one of the main pillars of its European development
