Volotea celebrates 75 million passengers in Olbia
Volotea, the airline that connects small and medium-sized European cities, today celebrated the milestone of 75 million passengers carried since its debut in 2012, with a unique and spectacular initiative.
This morning, at Olbia Costa Smeralda airport, in Sardinia (a region through which, in thirteen years, almost 10 million Volotea travelers have passed) the lucky 75 millionth passenger, Fabio Bonaiuto, was welcomed with a memorable surprise: the largest welcome mat in the world, a Guinness World Records installation that transformed his arrival into a moment to be framed.
A scenographic idea designed to excite, but also to reaffirm with lightness and originality Volotea's mission: to make every passenger feel at home, because every traveler is special.
The flight, which departed from Barcelona and landed in Olbia at 11:00, was not a simple transfer: already during the trip, passengers experienced an exclusive moment, with a celebratory announcement in the cabin and the presence on board of the founder and CEO Carlos Muñoz and part of the Volotea team, ready to celebrate this milestone together.
To welcome Fabio Bonaiuto on his arrival, an iconic inscription stood out on the 75-square-meter doormat: "Hello Mom, I'm the 75,000,000 passenger". A simple, affectionate and universal message, which celebrates the warmth of returning home and the emotion of hospitality. Because you know, the first person you write to after landing is almost always your mother.
To make the day even more special, Volotea rewarded Fabio with 75 free flights to share with his mother, an award that celebrates not only the value of travel, but also that of reuniting with loved ones. It is no coincidence that visiting friends and relatives is the second most popular reason for travel among Volotea passengers, immediately after tourism: 1 in 4 travelers choose Volotea precisely to find their loved ones, confirming the deep bond between the company, families and the territories served.
A journey that took 75 million passengers
From the first flight in 2012 to today, Volotea has built an increasingly extensive network: today it connects over 110 airports in Europe with more than 420 routes and 19 operational bases, 7 of which are in Italy. In 2025 alone, it will put 12.7 million seats on sale and operate around 75,000 flights.
A success testified not only by the numbers, but above all by passengers: 9 out of 10 customers recommend Volotea and the company boasts a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 39.2, the highest among the main European airlines. In Italy, the figure is even more positive, with an NPS of 42.1.
Olbia: a strategic basis for a record-breaking goal
Olbia is confirmed as a key airport for Volotea: in 2025 the company will offer 1.1 million seats and 27 routes, consolidating itself as the first carrier in terms of number of connections from the Sardinian airport. A bond also strengthened by Volotea's role in territorial continuity, which guarantees Sardinian passengers reliable connectivity all year round.
From 2012 to date, almost 10 million passengers have flown to or from Sardinia with Volotea, testifying to a solid and strategic relationship. The Barcelona-Olbia route, on which Fabio Bonaiuto traveled, is the only international connection operating in winter from the Sardinian airport, confirming the crucial role that this route plays for the company.
