Rome, a wandering guide in hidden beauty
Rome can be discovered even far from the great monumental routes and the places most frequented by visitors. This is the perspective proposed by Carlo Coronati in "Rome, a wandering guide in hidden beauty" (in italian "Roma, guida errante nella bellezza nascosta"), published by Edizioni il Lupo.
The volume collects 13 urban treks in Rome, all included within the Grande Raccordo Anulare, designed to cross neighborhoods, parks and landscapes normally excluded from traditional tourist itineraries. The goal is to restore the image of a more complex and stratified city, to be known slowly and with the freedom to deviate from the route.
The itineraries, generally between 12 and 15 kilometers long, touch very different areas of the capital. They range from Valle Aurelia to San Pietro and Monte del Gallo, from Monte Mario to Insugherata, from Fidene to Nuovo Salario and from viale Libia to piazzale Jonio. Other routes cross the steps of Montesacro, the suburbs between Rebibbia and Ponte Mammolo, the areas of Pietralata and Aniene, up to Piramide and Garbatella, EUR and Torrino, Villa Bonelli, Trullo and Corviale. The thirteenth itinerary follows the entire perimeter of the Walls of Rome.
What unites the different routes is above all the relationship with the urban landscape. Parks, villas, gardens, cycle paths, hamlets and peripheral spaces become elements through which to reconstruct a lesser-known Rome, where green areas and built fabric alternate continuously.
An important space is also dedicated to street art in Rome, used as a key to understanding the transformations of the neighborhoods. About 80 pages accompany the reader to discover the murals present in six macro-areas of the city of Rome, documenting works that are often monumental but also fragile and destined to change over time.
The photographs are signed by Filippo Pompili, who accompanies both the urban routes and the section dedicated to street art with his images.
The book therefore invites you to experience Rome with the spirit of the flâneur: walking without relying exclusively on a pre-established sequence of attractions, observing what happens along the way and leaving room for encounters, detours and unexpected discoveries.
For Coronati, urban trekking in Rome becomes a tool for getting to know the city and the people who live there. "Rome, a wandering guide in hidden beauty" is his fourth volume dedicated to this way of exploring the urban environment, after more than ten years of walking and exploring the capital. Roman, author of numerous hiking guides and passionate about mountains and street art, Coronati transfers to the metropolis the same approach used on the paths: proceed slowly, observe the territory and look for connections between apparently distant places.
