A designer retreat in Mallorca for an exclusive stay
On the west coast of Mallorca, where the Serra de Tramuntana descends towards the Mediterranean in a sequence of dramatic slopes and cultivated terraces, a new chapter of high-end hospitality is opening. It is here, above the village of Banyalbufar, that Annua Signature Hotels inaugurates from June 1, 2026, the Gran Hotel Margalida, a luxury boutique hotel with 29 suites overlooking the sea.
The hotel offers a natural evolution towards a broader and more scenic dimension of luxury, without sacrificing that intimacy and the ability to interpret the soul of the places. The project openly looks at a certain Mallorca of the Sixties, that of the Mediterranean jet set, of relaxed elegance and cinematic atmospheres, but reinterprets it with a contemporary, more essential and sensory language.
Banyalbufar, historically known as the island's orchard, is set in one of the most secluded and evocative landscapes of Mallorca. Here the ancient terraces descend towards the sea among Malvasia vineyards, olive groves and dry stone walls. Even the arrival is part of the narrative: the road crosses the mountain passes, the valley opens up and only at the last moment does the profile of the hotel reveal itself.
The architectural vision, signed by Álvaro Onieva and Estudio Mesonero Romanos in close collaboration with Álvaro Sasiambarrena, Co-CEO and creative soul of Annua Signature Hotels, aims to preserve the patina of time while opening up to the present. The lime-plastered facades, the measured volumes and the Mediterranean vegetation root the building in the hillside. From the street, the complex appears as a presence that has always belonged to the place; from the sea, on the other hand, it reveals itself in a cascade of elegant terraces that descend towards the water.
The entrance opens into a double-height lobby of almost six meters, where organic walls, stone, jute and palm trees embroidered by Spanish artisans build an environment of great tactile presence. Light immediately becomes the protagonist, moving on the natural fiber lamps of Planta Santavieira, in Yucatán, suspended like sculptural elements.
Beyond the lobby, a panoramic terrace frames the Mediterranean in a single gesture. The infinity pool blurs the boundary between water and sky, while the gardens inspired by traditional Mallorcan pallets create a sequence of platforms of quiet and shadow. Dry stone paths, among cypresses, wild olive trees and strawberry trees, accompany guests towards the sea through a landscape built on slowness.
The interiors, curated by the Madrid-based designer Virginia Nieto, develop the deepest character of the project. Its inspiration comes from the place, its history, light and popular architecture, and translates into spaces that balance retro suggestions, Mediterranean warmth and a subtle theatricality. Light, here too, is the most important material. Each Annua property has its own guide color; at Margalida it is yellow, evocation of the Mallorcan morning sun, wild mimosa and mountain honey.
All 29 suites look out over the Mediterranean and make the horizon an essential part of the experience. The rooms are designed as private coastal apartments, with sweeping proportions, curved furnishings inspired by mid-twentieth-century design, and handcrafted furniture. Two signature suites stand out for their high ceilings and showers that descend from above like a private hammam. In the other rooms, the visual continuity with the sea expands the space and accentuates its contemplative character. The traditional Mallorcan llengua fabric recurs throughout the structure, while tables and chairs are made individually, one by one, without repetition or serial production. The ambition is clear: everything is custom-made, everything is handmade, each piece designed to have an independent value.
The same coherence guides the gastronomic offer, entrusted to chef Joan Escalas Rosselló. His cuisine is based on seasonality, local product and respect for origin. The menus follow the rhythm of the island and are built on direct relationships with local fishermen and farmers. The signature restaurant, overlooking the sea, moves its story between the ports of Mallorca and the agricultural hinterland. Fishing line arrives daily from nearby ports, red prawns are grilled with citrus fruits and wild fennel, sea bass is cooked in a salt crust and served at the table, while slow-roasted local lamb is accompanied by seasonal vegetables. Organic oils, mountain honey, ancient tomatoes and artisanal cheeses complete an idea of Mediterranean cuisine that is both authentic and refined.
Next to the restaurant, a French-inspired Oyster and Raw Bar offers freshly opened oysters and raw seafood enhanced by calibrated citrus pairings. The Pool Bar adopts a more relaxed tone, with wood-fired focaccia, cold gazpacho, raw and rosé, while the Cocktail Bar, more intimate and covered in polished woods, is inspired by the travel lounges of the jet-set era with classic martinis, Negroni, Champagne and signature cocktails built around Mallorcan botanicals and citrus fruits.
For guests seeking privacy and scenography, the Margalida also offers secluded cliffside tables for candlelit dinners above the sea, as well as in-suite service with dedicated menus. The experience can be further expanded with wine tastings with local bodegas, honey and olive oil tastings, cooking workshops, and visits to local producers.
Well-being here is not conceived as separation, but as atmosphere. Light, silence and sea air define Annua's first fully integrated wellness concept. The spa occupies a lower level that opens onto a secluded seaside terrace and offers treatments based on Mediterranean botanicals, sea salt, citrus and almond, alongside advanced therapeutic techniques. The path includes a heated swimming pool, vital showers and eucalyptus steam baths. Yoga at dawn takes place on a platform overlooking the horizon, while a studio with Technogym equipment and Pilates Reformer responds to those who want a more dynamic approach.
The common spaces are also designed to encourage a slower pace. A library dedicated to art, fashion and travel opens onto a shaded courtyard, while a lowered lounge, lit to evoke the Mediterranean twilight, becomes the ideal place for nightly conversations accompanied by aged rums or rare whiskeys. The terraced gardens invite you to explore without haste, between iridescent viewpoints and private corners.
For those who also want to experience the area, the program of experiences includes guided excursions in the Serra de Tramuntana with picnics prepared by the hotel team, private boat charters to coves accessible only from the sea and discreetly organized visits to galleries and artisan ateliers in Palma. The villages of the west coast remain close, but far enough away from the great flows to retain their authentic character.
At the Gran Hotel Margalida, the charm of a golden Mallorca returns to be felt with a sense of ease, elegance and security without ostentation. An address that combines light, space and roots in the landscape in a more discreet, tactile and profoundly contemporary form of luxury.
