Airport-Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis, known as Heraklion International Airport, is the main airport of the island of Crete and the busiest in Greece. It serves the city of Heraklion City Greek (Iráklion in Greek), Agios Nikolaos, Malia, Hersonissos and Stalis Elounda.
 
It is named after Nikos Kazantzakis Heraklion, greek writer and poet. The airport was opened in 1939. During the second world war it was closed and reopened in 1946. Between 1968 and 1971, the runway was lengthened to reach 2,680 meters. In 1972 was inaugurated the recent airport with a new terminal and services. Between 1996 and 2005 was further increased the space of the terminal.
