Bucharest Băneasa - Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (BBU), also known as Bucharest Băneasa Airport, is located in the Băneasa district of Bucharest, Romania, about 8.5 km from the city center. The airport, named after Aurel Vlaicu (a Romanian engineer, inventor, airplane builder, and first pilot) was the only commercial airport in Bucharest until 1969, when Bucharest-Henri Coanda International Airport, also known as Bucharest Otopeni Airport (OTP) was opened for civilian flights.
The Bucharest National Airport Company operates the two main airports in Romania: Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport and Bucharest Băneasa - Aurel Vlaicu International Airport.
The current terminal building, designed in the late 1940s and inaugurated in 1952, has a particular architecture consisting of a central dome with three distinct wings representing the propeller of a three-bladed aircraft. Over the years it has undergone renovations for the track and lighting system but also for shopping areas, restaurants, a VIP lounge and the parking lot. The airport, after the renovation, reopened to scheduled flights in 2022 mainly to destinations served by low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air.
